Assessing the impact of healthcare research: A systematic review of methodological frameworks

Ketan Malik

Abstract

From its inception until May 2017, two independent researchers conducted a comprehensive search of the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL+), the Health Management Information Consortium, and the Journal of Research Evaluation for publications that provided a methodological framework for research impact. Then, we compiled the ideas and themes that appeared in all methodological frameworks and identified the metrics employed to assess various kinds of effect. The following five broad categories of impact were identified: (1) "primary research-related impact," (2) "influence on policy making," (3) "health and health systems impact," (4) "health-related and societal impact," and (5) "broader economic impact." Each of these categories was addressed by one of twenty-four distinct methodological frameworks.
