Abstract

The emphasis on increasing healthcare quality is not new. The founding charter of the Royal College of Physicians in 1517 emphasised the need of members setting and maintaining standards of practise "for their own honour and the public advantage." 
However, in the last 20 years, enhancing healthcare quality and safety has taken on new significance in the United Kingdom.
