Imitation as Sources of Sustainable Competitive

Abstract

The literature on the idea and phenomena of invention and imitation is lacking in several areas, which are partially filled by the current study. We distinguish between the ideas of invention and imitation based on traits that the literature identifies as traits of innovation. We developed a typology of organisations ranging from radical innovators to rigid mimics using these characteristics as well as taking a company's level of entrepreneurialism and market orientation into account. Additionally, we contend that a few crucial elements and the selection of an effective strategy decide whether creative and copycat businesses may acquire and preserve their durable competitive advantages.
